This is an auction for a 1983 MCI-9 Crusader II 40 Foot Bus that has been converted to a completely self-contained Motor Coach RV Home.
ABOUT MCI: On December 7, 2007 - Motor Coach Industries (MCI) celebrated 75 years of coach-building. MCI is a leader in the industry because of its decades of experience, commitment to quality and the dedication of its people.
Like so many journeys, MCI's started with one man setting his eye on a horizon. While MCI founder Harry Zoltok got into the bus business as far back as 1928, it was in 1933 that he took the giant leap from repairing the buses of others to building his own.
That first coach, an 11-passenger body on a Packard passenger-car chassis, was built in the company's 5,000-square-foot plant, earlier known as the Fort Garry Motor Body and Paint Works Limited.
Today, most notably, MCI has the distinction of building the most popular models in the U.S. and Canada, beginning with the MC-9, launched in 1978, followed by the D-Series. Today, it's the MCI J4500 that ranks number one on the hit parade list of best sellers.
With headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois, and sales and service centers across the U.S. and Canada, MCI is the leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of coaches and is the industry's leading supplier of coach-related aftermarket parts and services for most makes and models.
HISTORY ON THIS BUS: This bus being auctioned is owned by the folks that had it professionally converted to a self-contained Motor Coach RV Home. The bus was a commercial passenger bus in C & H Lines Bus Lines Fleet, located In GA (see photo). The present owners purchased the bus in December 2003, then sent it to Hartland Coach Company, located in Arcadia, FL. Hartland professionally converted this bus to a Motor Coach RV Home. The photos and video show the conversion was first quality.
We, 2NicePeople asked the owners who are selling it, "Why did you buy this passenger bus, and then have it converted?"
Their answer: In their 70s now and retired from travel, they said they had seen too many regular motorhomes that had been in an accident or a rollover. And they found that most motor homes (regular RVs), while basically a little stronger construction than a mobile home, they were far from the standards of safety that's required of passenger buses.
They said typically if a regular style RV motorhome should roll over - forget it. The motor home warps and bends, and essentially is done for. Plus the greater chance of injuries to people in accidents. But with commercial buses, you simply have them rolled back up, get in, and in most cases, get back on the road. Then they went on to tell us about the superior strength of metals used back in the 80's in bus construction. If someone hit them in an accident, it would be the other person who got hurt, not them. Made sense! Frankly - it was smart!
This from the couple who traveled in this bus (with no children and no pets). They know what they are talking about, from experience.
Some of their other reasons they were so happy with their purchase were: How quiet the bus was inside, with the engine in the rear. Then the smooth ride from bus size tires and suspension. They looked into the MCI bus reputation. The best in the industry. Then they had other people they knew who had nothing but the 'best experiences' with Detroit Diesel engines. Then towing a vehicle -- they didn't even know it was behind them. They loved the extra quietness inside from higher strength materials buses are made with because of safety standards. Then on the outside, literally no maintenance with real stainless steel wrap-around's, not aluminum. Plus they loved the one-hand ease in lifting any of compartment doors outside (just the way buses are), and how little space it took to open compartment doors. Then there was the huge storage room in the compartments, and the overall ease of access to everything.
In researching, a new bus like this can easily cost $165,000+ |

The complete passenger bus interior and air and heat conditioning system was removed. Then Hartland custom installed the complete new interior as shown in this ad, installing two (2) new roof mounted Air/Heat Systems and two (2) new Air Exhaust Systems, installed all the other systems new, serviced the bus, and then completely repainted the exterior, including the roof. |

All aspects involved in the home conversion on this bus (interior materials, electronic related items, lighting components, electrical and wiring, all septic toilet, water systems, ac-heat-vent systems, mechanical interior components, cabinets, furniture, bedding, carpeting, wood floors, other wood used, counters, plastic, plumbing, metal, appliances, insulation, sliding doors, and all other systems installed in the home conversion) were all top quality, and brand new when installed in early 2004. 3/4 Inch plywood is over original bus flooring. Flooring surfaces in bus are real wood or carpeting (see photos).
There are owners manuals included for the bus itself, major appliances, generator, air conditioning / heating systems, awning and more ...
MECHANICAL: Other than front windshield passenger side is cracked, the owners are selling it as their needs have changed. They stated they know of nothing the bus needs mechanically. 2NicePeople have been in the bus on a road test, and to shoot photos and videos (see photos and movie videos). Michelin tires are in good shape (see photos in gallery), wheels (white) could use repainting possibly to make them look as good at the rest of the bus exterior, which the exterior paint and stainless steel is in exceptional condition.
Engine: V8 - 8-71 Detroit Diesel You may see the V8 shown if you do research as a 871, 8 71, 8-71, or 8v71.
Engine Crankcase Capacity: 28 Quarts Hydraulic Power Steering System Capacity: 7.5 Quarts Transmission Type: 5 Speed Manual Standard Transmission Capacity : 22 Pints Rear Axle Lube Capacity: 18 Quarts Cooling System Capacity: 30 Gallons Fuel Tank Capacity: 144 Gallons
The bus smoothly started right up without any issue whatsoever, and has great acceleration (we saw none of the typical heavy black smoke that we often see with diesel buses). The transmission shifted up and down smoothly, it rode smoothly and was very quiet inside (even under acceleration). The bus turned properly, backed up fine, and braked properly. All interior appliances, interior and exterior lights and plumbing worked at the time of our inspection for creating this ad. Once riding in this bus, one can understand why the powerful V8 Detroit Diesel engine that is in this bus is indeed a legend.
The powerful Generator immediately with one touch of the button started right up (see Movie videos). Although we are not bus or motor home experts, we noted nothing other than the windshield cracked. The bus is being sold 'as is', but we feel from our inspection that this RV Home Motor Coach Bus Home is in excellent condition. |

Bus Was Serviced 2,000 Miles Ago (change engine oil [Shell Rotela 15/40], oil in rear end, check the wet lube hubs and tag in rear). The owners are selling the bus because their needs changed. They drove the bus approximately 10,000 miles over the last three years since they had it professionally converted. When they had it converted, they were just retired travelers/tourists. They lived in the bus for three years traveling. Along the way in their travels the last three years, they were offered and accepted permanent full-time management at a RV campground in Florida. They have loved their three years traveling and living in the 40 Foot Motor Coach Home, but now have new quarters in the campground they manage. |
